James E. Geil, a lifelong sailor and educator, has completed his new book, Sailing a North Sea Pilot Schooner: My Years Aboard Tabor Boy, a gripping memoir of life at the helm of a North Sea schooner. Geil was a faculty member in the nautical faculty of Tabor Academy for 35 years and captain of SSV Tabor Boy for 33 years. He created the school’s Orientation at Sea program and has spent 22 summers cruising the coast of Maine and nine more in Buzzards Bay honing the program.
Geil said: “While many sailing training captains and crew tend to be transient, I stayed with Tabor and Tabor Boy for thirty-five years. The reason for this decision was the opportunity to work with high schoolers to take students out of the classroom and expose them to real-world challenges and experiences!”
