The nonprofit National Book Foundation recognizes the best new books by a US publisher each year.

Jurors, nominated by former winners, finalists, and other jurors, spend the summer reading hundreds of submissions (around 150 for poetry) before picking the 10 best titles in each category (longlists) in September and five in October best (shortlists).

When the winner is announced on November 17th, it will be news for everyone; Nobody knows who it will be until the judges decide on the day of the announcement. (The Booker Prize follows a similar schedule).

The winners will receive $ 10,000 and the finalists will receive $ 1,000. Both can expect a surge in prestige and book sales. Past winners include popular poets Mary Oliver and Frank Bidart, who have received the Pulitzer Prize.

Below are the 10 books that made it onto the longlist for the 2021 National Book Award in Poetry. This year’s longlist includes works by former Pulitzer Prize winners and emerging talent.
