The Athens Public Works Office announces the following extension of the road closure:

The affected area is Keith Lane from Crestway Drive to Powers Path. This block lasts from Monday, July 19, 5:00 p.m. to Friday, July 30, 5:00 p.m. The purpose of this blocking is the installation of a box culvert.

Motorists are advised to exercise extreme caution and watch out for traffic signs, workers and pedestrians. Drivers should plan additional time for traffic delays in this area.

On Tuesday, June 15, the Athens City Council approved the city’s budget for the financial year 2021-22.

A summary of the approved budget with its intended uses and information to support the budgetary measures taken by the city council is available for public inspection at the Tax Office in the Athens Municipal Building at 815 North Jackson St. between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m. Monday through Friday. The annual budget is also available online at www.athenstn.gov/finance/

Isaiah 117 House asks contractors, electricians, plumbers, roofers, builders, excavators, frame builders, bricklayers, painters, cabinet builders, HVAC, landscapers and any other craftsman or supplier to attend the Monroe / McMinn Contractors Dinner on Tuesday, July 20th, 6:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. (doors open at 6:00 p.m.) at Mountain Trust Mortgage, located at 4653 Highway 411 in Madisonville.

The project to build the Monroe / McMinn Isaiah 117 House is scheduled to break the ground on August 3rd. This event provides information on how contractors can help.

EG Fisher Public Library volunteers receive used books from 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. Saturday morning.

Used books, DVDs, tapes and records are welcome. The delivery takes place on the veranda (overhang). Two parking spaces are provided for the return of used items.

The Etowah Carnegie Library is offering the following programs this week as part of the Tails and Tales Summer Reading Program:

• Tuesday, July 20, 1:30 pm: Etowah Fire Department Touch a Truck program

• Wednesday, July 21st at 1.30pm: camel and handicrafts program

• Thursday, July 22nd, 1:30 pm: Kangaroo program with Craft

All programs are free, personal and take place outside in the library when the weather is nice. Programs can be changed and / or canceled due to inclement weather if they cannot be moved indoors. Follow the library’s Facebook page for the latest program information. Bring a garden chair.

The Friends of Etowah Carnegie Library will host a pop-up book sale in the library on Thursday, July 22nd, from 3pm to 5pm

The Good Faith Clinic will take place on July 27th at the Christ Community Church in Athens.

The pharmacy is no longer driven through and every patient is subjected to triage.

Please note the new opening times: refilling at 3 p.m. and a visit to the doctor at 3:30 p.m.

Enter the building behind the sanctuary through the door closest to the dumpster. Appropriate barriers and masks are used. For reasons of space, only the patient is allowed to enter the building.

The Etowah Carnegie Library is showing new artwork from Community Artists League artist Barbara Bisson. This work of art will be on view until August.

The Community Artists League is an organization promoting the arts in the greater Athens area. The league supports and encourages students, amateurs, and professional artists with monthly meetings, art exhibition opportunities, and camaraderie.

Families can participate in the 1,000 pre-kindergarten books at the Etowah Carnegie Library.

The program is a nationwide challenge that encourages parents and carers to read to their children on a regular basis. By reading one book a night, families can reach the 1,000-book goal in three years and teach their children basic reading and writing skills.

The free program is available to all families with children aged between birth and five years. Registration is possible at etowahcarnegie.readsquared.com

The Athens Farmers Market is open Tuesdays and Thursdays from 3pm to 6pm and Saturdays from 9am to 11am in the Market Park Pavilion in downtown Athens.

All sellers at the Athens Farmers Market are local producers and their products are grown locally. All interested providers can submit an application to the Parks & Recreation office. They can also be obtained online at athenstn.gov and emailed back to [email protected]
