Greensboro will try again to get a playoff spot.

The two FCL teams are expected to end their season this morning. They were supposed to play against each other on Friday and Saturday but those games were canceled as the pitchers were short. Then the gold team’s game in Sarasota got rained in the fourth inning which broke off a great start for Luis Peralta so they are done. They finish with a record of 30-14, which is currently the second best in the league. The black team has also been rained out so they finish at 19-23.

It’s been a strange season in the complex league. At first, MLB apparently beat it up at the last minute – note that on the league’s websites, the logo at the top still reads “GCL”. That, and the difficulty of navigating the various FCL websites, shows what an afterthought it was for the bean counters involved in the sport. On the pirates’ side, it almost feels like they haven’t gotten up all the way. A normal GCL season consisted of around 50 games, but FCL Pirates Gold will only play 44 and Pirates Black will play 42. The July draft meant we got a quick look at the prep hitting draftees. The Pirates chose not to activate the draftees for prep pitching at all, except for Bubba Chandler showing up as shortstop and DH. Even some of the college pitchers didn’t show up in games.

The game was rained out in the fourth inning with no points, so the gold team’s season is over. It’s a shame the game was abandoned as Luis Peralta fanned out the first six punches he faced and was perfect through three with eight K’s.
