Mimi Calter, assistant university librarian at Stanford University, has been named vice provost and university librarian at Washington University in St. Louis, according to Provost Beverly Wendland. Calter will go to university in the fall; she succeeds Denise Stephens, who served as library dean at the University of Oklahoma earlier this year.
“I am pleased to welcome Mimi as our new vice provost and university librarian,” said Wendland. “She is a creative, strategic thinker who has done a lot to improve research, teaching, and learning for faculty and students at Stanford. A library has many different roles in a university, and it is important that the library meets the needs of all members of our community, from professors doing research in the humanities to students working on data analysis. I look forward to working with Mimi to ensure that the library helps our faculties and students achieve their academic goals. ”
Calter will oversee Washington University Libraries, a system of 10 campus facilities and his 140-strong team of specialist librarians, curators and archivists. Their job is to empower print and digital collections, develop programs to support research, teaching, and learning, and collaborate with academics on and off campus.
“I am excited to join Washington University’s libraries and continue to develop the libraries’ tools to support teaching, research and learning,” said Calter. “From special collections to digital library programs and data services, libraries are clearly an important partner for teachers and students. As the university participates in the strategic planning, I look forward to building and deepening this relationship. “
Calter has served the Stanford Libraries for 16 years. In her current role, she has helped develop the libraries’ $ 84 million budget, manage the 400-strong staff, expand digital technology and repositories, and manage capital projects including moving the second largest campus library and developing the David Rumsey Map Center.
Calter earned her bachelor’s degrees in English from the University of Pennsylvania and her degrees in business administration and library and information science from Drexel University.
Calter was selected by the 12-person selection committee chaired by Douglas Dowd, Professor of Art at the Sam Fox School of Design & Visual Arts and American Culture Studies in Arts & Sciences and Faculty Director of the DB Dowd Modern Graphic History Library.
“The committee saw her as an excellent advocate, thinker, and leader for this moment,” said Dowd. “Above all, we were looking for someone to run the university libraries in partnership with the research company WashU in addition to its traditional role in supporting teaching and learning. We are confident that Mimi Calter will take libraries to a new level. We look forward to welcoming you to campus. “
